Platinum jubilee

The Department of Indian Music, Madras University, has organised events for three days (July 20, 21 and 23) to celebrate its Platinum Jubilee. The venue is the Senate House. The celebration opens at 4.15 p.m. with M. Prameela, head, department of Mus ic and member, Syndicate, welcoming the gathering. Music maestro M. Balamuralikrishna will deliver the inaugural address. The keynote address will be presented by N. Mahalingam, industrialist and the presidential address by Prof. S. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras. M. Ranganathan, Registrar, releases the Platinum Jubilee souvenir.

Felicitations will be offered by eminent musicians including M.B.Vedavalli, Seetha Chidambaram, Sulochana Pattabhiraman and Maithreyi Ramadurai.

Cultural programme from 6 p.m. onwards incudes Bharatanatyam presentation and folk music by Pushpavanam Kuppusamy and wife Anita. Cine fame Damu will present a mimicry show.

A seminar, Research Areas in Performing Arts and Present and Future, spread over July 21 and 23 (from 10.30 a.m.) will have well-known practitioners of art presiding over the sessions. The valedictory address on July 23 will be presented by mridangam vidwan guru Karaikkudi Mani, who will speak on ‘Importance of Layam in Music.’ This will be followed by a presentation of popular music by alumni Anuradha Sriram and Rahul Adarsh Ravindran.
