Too many loose ends -- Mamadurai
Mamadurai Genre: Social drama
Director: K.K.Krishnan
Cast: Vasan Karthik, Mithuna, Seetha, Delhi Ganesh, Vadivelu, Karunas, Ilavarasu, Mayilsami and ‘Kirean’ Manohar.
Storyline: Starts as a love story but gets diverted half way.
Bottomline: Too rambling.
Thamizh Nadu Creators “Mamadurai” is virtually a combination of two stories but they do not meet making the script look weak. There are too many loop holes in the screenplay that take away the charm.
Young Vasan Karthik and Mithuna fall in love with each other. The only hurdle comes in the form of Mithuna’s brother Kottai Kumar. When he gives green signal to their marriage, before intermission, one wonders what actually is left to be told.
The director, however, has plans. The hero, who all along is under the impression that he is an orphan, comes to know that Seetha is his mother and goes in search of her. And there the script falls flat.
Acting with ease
Vasan Karthik has a hero’s personality and emotes well. He also does the dance and fights with ease. Mithuna has a long way to go in terms of acting. Vadivel proceeding on a separate track, does manage to raise a few laughs. But Karunas does not impress much.
Kottaikumar as the villain (only till the first half) does justice to his role. But he should have worked more on voice modulation, particularly in delivering the punch dialogue at certain places. Seetha as the young mother shines.
It is a puzzle why a gifted composer like Karthik Raja is yet to make it big. His background score certainly enhances the proceedings and among the five songs, at least three are bound to be hits. The title song ‘Maduramadurathan’ written by Kottaikumar and sung by Ilaiyaraja, Naveen, Rita, Ragul, Vasu, Viji and Sangeetha, is already one.
Another good number is ‘Askalakkale’ written by Kalaikumar and sung by Ranjith, Kannan, Selva, Malgudi Subha, Naveen and Vasu. ‘Koondugal’ written by Valee and sung by Karthik and Sangeetha finds the audience swaying.
Camera work by A. Karthikraja is another plus point for the film. If the director had bothered to join the loose ends, a reasonably good film would have emerged.
Apart from writing the story, screenplay and the dialogue K.K.Krishnan has directed the film. KGB is the producer.
