Gowthami, graceful heroine of several hits, is back with plans.

Critically acclaimed: Gowthami in ‘Saasanam.’
The small screen has attracted quite a few stars of the tinsel world. Some enter the field to prove their versatility and for that different kind of experience. Some others, who don’t strike it rich on the silver screen but have plenty of talen
t left, take the plunge to keep themselves fruitfully occupied. The serials and talk shows that they anchor soon climb to the top of the popularity chart.
Gowthami has been one of the latest to join the club. Charming heroine of several films, she lent colour and glamour to ‘Anbudan,’ the chat segment that she hosted. Excerpts from an interview:
After a long hiatus you have come back. Now how will you describe yourself?
Well, I am determined, sensitive and confident. I am compassionate. I do have ideals but never do I lose my sense of pragmatism.
Do you remember your first film and the experience while filming it?
Certainly I do.The film was ‘Dayamaiyud u’ in Telugu. I got the role as it was produced by my father’s nephew.
The shooting was at Kuthuchagi tomb at Hyderabad. The minute I stood in front of the camera the reflectors were turned on me. The hot sun was too much to bear and I fainted. And in Tamil, it was ‘Guru Sishyan.’ I felt very nervous as I had to act with stars such as Rajinikanth, Prabhu, Manorama, Vinu Chakravarthi, Cho and others. But the film did very well and boosted my confidence. It was a good break.
How many films have you acted and which one do you think is the best?
I’m not too sure of the number but it could be around 120 all the South Indian languages (Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Tamil) and Hindi put together. The majority is Tamil.
It is difficult to mention just one film as the best. However, I’d choose ‘Devar Magan,’ and ‘Nee Paadhi Naan Paadhi’ (Tamil), ‘Sukrutham,’ and ‘His Highness Abdullah’ (Malayalam) and ‘Sankalpam’ (Telugu).
In spite of this, awards, generally, have missed you. Comment.
Well, I’d look at this way. I was a novice and just had no clue about choosing films. Doing 120 films in seven years — it was hectic. I just didn’t pause to analyse the story or think whether there was scope for an award. When I was nearly exhausted I decided to take a break. What are your other interests?
I like writing and production. It was this interest that resulted in the talk show, ‘Anbudan,’ aired on Sun TV, produced and hosted by me. Any plans to produce feature films?
I am planning to produce a film. But it is too early to say anything.
What about acting?
If I am offered a good role I am ready to do it.
Why was ‘Sasanam’ not a success at the box office?
I think it had a limited release and may be that prevented it from reaching the mass.
But the film got an amazing response and good reviews from the critics. It will certainly touch a chord if shown on TV.
