Kalyan does justice to Deekshitar’s compositions.

Kalyan at the concert.
Kalyan Vasanth, barely 16 years of age, has been a prodigious talent. His mother K. Padmavathy is his guru and he went under the tutelage of Neetha, a lecturer in the Telugu university. Now in his second year Inter, Kalyan has a scholarship from CCRT
(Center for Resource and Training), Government of India. Academically too he is equipped with a certificate course conducted by the Telugu University in both vocal and veena.
He has performed in Mauritius under the Cultural Exchange program of Government of India. He is yet to make a mark among adult singers. He was awarded a gold medal for his proficiency in music by the European Telugu Academy. He was invited by the music sabha Sujanaranjani last week to perform at its venue, Sanathnagar Devasthanam complex. He was in the company of O. Rajasekhar on violin and Ch. Ramakrishna on mridangam.
Kalyan Vasanth rendered nearly a dozen numbers in his traditional repertoire, but dominated by Deekshitar’s compositions. He opened with a Kambhoji Varnam, Taruni Ninnu of Tiruvattiyur Thyagayyar. Vandeham in Hamsadhwani of Deekshitar with swaram set him well for a smooth flow of music. Annapoorne of Dikshitar in Sama, Eti Janmamidi in Varlali in Misra chapu, coupled with a brief raga essay, were pleasing renditions. Parandhamavati in Dharmavati was a rare presentation.
Again there was another Dikshitar composition Akshayalinga Vibho in Sankarabharanam. And the boy eventually turned this melody into the concert’s highlight.
