Percussion festival



RECOGNITION Lifetime Achievement Awards to eminent artistes and Youth Awards to young artists are to be given

Percussive Arts Centre is organising its 26th annual Thaalavaadyotsav which will be one till Sunday. Several eminent scholars, musicians, musicologists and others will be participating in this international percussive arts festival and conference, th at will be on at the Seva Sadana, 14th cross, Malleswaram.


The festival that was inaugurated yesterday will have its valedictory on July 29, Sunday, at 10 a.m.. Justice M. Rama Jois will present Lifetime Achievement Awards to eminent artistes and Youth Awards to young reputed artists. Pandit Rajshekhar Mansur, President, Karnataka Sangeetha Nruthya Academy, will deliver the valedictory address.


The Palghat Mani Iyer memorial award will be given to mridanga Vidwan Mavelikara K. Velukutty Nair. The Palani Subramanya Pillai memorial award will be presented to khanjira Vidwan Sosale Seshagiri Das. The Bangalore K. Venkataram memorial award will be given to eminent art critic S.N. Chandrashekar. The H. Puttachar memorial award will be given to B. Dhruvaraj for mridangam and the CMANA prize (Carnatic Music Association of North America) to U.N. Giridhar Udupa for ghatam.


Performances during the festival include a vocal duet by Hyderabad Brothers – Raghavachari and Seshachari, violin duet by Mysore M. Nagaraj and Mysore M. Manjunath, vocal recital by Mysore Nagamani Srinath. Special percussion performances by Sthree Taal Tarang directed by Sukanya Ramagopal, Laya Vrushti directed by Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma, percussion solo by Mavelikara K. Velukutty Nair, and a percussion duet by K.U. Jayachandra Rao and G. Omkar. Programmes begin at 6 p.m. For details contact V.Krishna, director, Percussive Arts Centre on 94484-63079.
