Devotion-filled festival

Culture The 332nd Sage Narayana Teertha jayanthi saw rendering of songs composed by the Sage.

Tarangams are songs from Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini written in chaste Sanskrit in 16th Century by Sage Narayana Teertha . The songs are popular in south India and sung in ‘bhajana goshtis’ (groups) and concerts. Taran gams are also perfectly suited for choreography.

Narayana Teeratha was born at Kaza in Guntur district. The 332nd Jayanthi of the great Sage was celebrated for three days in the village and was jontly organised by Sadguru Sri Narayana Teertha Trust of Kaza and Thiruppondurthi Sri Narayana Teertha Trust, Chennai. A temple of for Narayana Teertha is under construction in Kaza.

The festival was inaugurated M. Balamuralikrishna who was also felicitated. In the inaugural function G. Jailal, M. Aditya Prasad, K.S. Subramaniyan, A. Ramjee, Meenakshi Natarajan and B. Udaya Lakshmi appreciated the effort of the two trusts in constructing the temple and deciding to celebrate the Sage’s Jayanthi every year. They congratulated scholar T.S. Ramachandra Rao and B.V. Ramanakumar , the two behind the mammoth effort. Tiruppondurthi Venkatesan, managing trustee of the Tiruppondurthi Trust was conferred the title ‘Taranga Gana Siromani.’ Natarajan, who produced two prodigious volumes on Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini was also felicitated. G.V. Krishnaiah compered the programme.The festival featured man y taragam singing groups and tarangam concerts of several vidwans like Akondi Srinivasa Raja Rao of Kakinada, Neeharika, Sampathkumar of Hyderabad and Gayatri Girish of Chennai. Bhajan groups from Andhra and Tamil Nadu performed the ‘goshti ganam’. The most impressive one was rendered by the troupe of Udayalur Kalyanarama Bhagavathar of Chennai.

Another melodious Taranga Goshtiganam was presented by the artistes from Vijayawada, Malladi Sriram Prasad, Ravikumar, M.Sudhakar, P.S. Rao, Saraswathi, Krishnaveni, Narayana Sarma, Nagalakshmi, Vasavi, Neeharika, Sowmya and several other artistes. The concluding Anjaneya Utsavam was performed in dance form appealingly by Sai Ramya came as a fitting finale for the devotion filled festival.
