A ‘high voltage’ entertainer

M. L. NARASIMHAM

Galaxy Multi Media’s ‘State Rowdy’ has less action and more humour.

Full of fun The hero plans how to evict the unwanted tenants with the house owner.

The familiar sound of 1,2,3,4 greet us as we enter the floor at the Ramoji Film City. Choreographer Pradeep Anthony’s assistants are explaining the movements to lead actors Sivaji, Mallika Kapoor and Madhushalini for the song sequence being fil med at a specially made set for Galaxy Multi Media’s maiden venture, State Rowdy directed by Vikram Gandhi. Once the rehearsal is done with Pradeep Anthony shouts ‘light… camera… action.’ The song is playe d on the nagra. The hero with the two heroines on either side gives lip sync to the lyric – Boppayi pandu…Danimma pandu… as he places his steps in tune with Srilekha’s music. The choreographer shouts ‘cut& #8217; and Vasu’s camera whirrs to a stop. The actors have to perform it one more time as part of the betterment exercise.

“Bhaskarabhatla Ravikumar wrote the lyric. This song emanates from the imagination of one of the heroine’s (Madhushalini) father, the house owner (Chandramohan). He knows his daughter is in love with Rambabu (Sivaji) who helps him get rid off some unwanted tenants. A doubting Thomas that he is, he thinks that Mallika Kapoor, the daughter of a don (Vijaya Rangaraju) too has fallen in love with the hero,” executive producer Yalamanchi Ravichand briefs us about the scene. He had earlier made, Seetharamudu with Sivaji.

“It is a remake of the Tamil film, Edhiri. It has more of action in the second half. We made it a comedy. There is less action and more of humour,” says Ravichand as we watch the lead actors perform the song sequence ag ain. The title is borrowed from a Chiranjeevi hit, we point out.

“To avoid comparisons we have added a tag line – Veedikantha Scene Ledhu. After considering many titles we felt that this one suits our film more. The hero here is a fake rowdy. He poses as if he is a goonda. At one stag e, he and his friend need some money and his friend Venumadhav brings up this proposal that if they can make some tenants vacate, the house owner will give them the amount. Now all that Rambabu has to do is to pose as a rowdy. Forced to don the get up Rambabu makes the tenants vacate but from then on a series of incidents happen in his life. They lead him into tense moments but create a laugh riot for the viewers,” says Vikram Gandhi. The unit is leaving for Araku valley to film the remaining three songs, after completing work here. “The songs are melodious. We needed greenery and a hill backdrop. Araku is the best place,” informs Ravichand. He terms his venture as a ‘high voltage entertainer.’

Rajitha and Benerjee play the caretaker sister and brother-in-law of the hero. Krishna Bhagwan, M.S. Narayana, Kondavalsa Lakshmana Rao, Jeeva and Hema are among the cast. Produced by K. Srinivas and J.V. Umamaheswara Rao, the film is slated for an August-September release.
