The Gayana Samaja seminar took up an interesting topic
|
At Gayana Samaja’s ongoing 39th Music Conference, a rare subject came up for discussion: “Music Management –Impresario”. Steered by santoor maestro Pt. Satish Vyas, the musician expressed his anguish on the current scenario in
which upcoming, talented musicians were at a crossroads when it came to spreading their wings of creativity. Should the talented approach sabhas and patrons with a self introduction, should organisations looking for talent sieve the good after measured scrutiny, should establishments, dedicated to the promotion of classical music, form a musicians-pool and handle its public relations for performances, or should musicians have their own PR team to familiarise them to the music world?
“Anyway you look at it, Music Management is something that cannot be ignored, with a glut of talent and few to project them. You need smart managing tapping the right doors,” said Mr. Vyas.
Agreeing with Mr. Vyas, Mysore V. Subramanya said: “The subject holds good even with respect to choosing a competent artiste for bringing them into a sabha. Giving a generous ear to the upcoming musician’s recorded pieces should only help organisers decide on their participation,” opined Subramanya.
Sarod maestro Dr. Rajeev Taranath articulated his points rather strongly on the issue even as he stressed the importance of an impresario that could bring light into a musician’s career.
“Decades ago when I heard Pt. Ravishankar’s recital at Town Hall in the city, he had crowd of 35 people! If impresarios hadn’t been in the picture, could the world be witness to scores of albums and students the sitar maestro has produced today?” he said. “What is important is impresarios have to work with a modicum of honesty, seriousness and sustaining interest. It works wonders for both the artiste and the organisation involved,” said Mr. Rajeev.
Every speaker urged that an organisation with cultural and social standing like The Gayana Samaja should come forward to help musicians take the right road and reach the right door to unleash ones talent.
