Veteran comedian Crazy Mohan is all set to run a series of his classic comedy drama starting this weekend at Rani Seethai Hall. ‘Crazy Comedy Galatta - 2007’ has been arranged to celebrate the 28th year of his drama troupe, says Mohan. Wh at’s more he has also started work on his new script ‘Vambu Kanaa Kandaen’ (translates to ‘I had a naughty dream’), after four years. “That, actually, calls for celebration,” says Mohan, tongue-in-cheek.

Since their coming together in 1979, Crazy Mohan and his troupe — Crazy Creations — have created over 30 plays with original scripts and staged over 4,500 shows all over India and abroad. Thanks to Kamal Hassan, whom Mohan affectionately refers to as ‘a member of our joint family,’ the playwright has made significant contributions to the silver screen as well.

His biggest achievement, according to Mohan, is keeping his troupe intact with him, for three decades.

Over the years, cinema and television have taken much time and energy out of him, but ‘Crazy’ Mohan insists that drama would remain his first love. “Stage performances help me gauge the pulse of the audience. The response is immediate and it also helps me when I write the script and the dialogue for cinema.”

But does he ever get concerned about retaining viewership, especially with the American stand-up and what the satellite television dishes out everyday? “Well, I used to be worried but not anymore. I know now that good comedy will always find its audience. The response to my TV serials is proof of that.” Some of his latest plays are meant for the new audience, he says citing ‘Jurassic Baby’ and ‘Crazy Ghost’ as examples. ‘Vambu Kanna Kandaen’ will also be a bit bizarre because it is about ‘Maadhu’ confusing his dream life and real life.”

Mohan does not think that Tamil theatre is not doing well.He says there was considerable demand from fans as well as big Corporate organisations for him to stage his plays. The ‘Crazy Comedy Galatta - 2007’ is itself a result of that demand.

The mela opens this Saturday at Rani Seethai Hall and goes on till August 19. It will feature nine plays starting with “Meesai Aanalum Manaivi.” The show starts at 7 p.m. everyday. For tickets call: 98410 49386. Tickets will be available at the venue from 10 a.m.
