To catch a killer

‘Ayur Rekha’ is a suspense-filled film that centres on the investigation of a murder. VIJAY GEORGE

Playing detectives: Sreenivasan, Mukesh and Jagathy Sreekumar on the sets of ‘Ayur Rekha.’

Sreenivasan dons the role of a policeman in director G.M. Manu’s ‘Ayur Rekha’ (lifeline). A role that he has played many times on the screen with varying degrees of success.

The shoot of the film, with Sreenivasan, Mukesh, Indrajith, Lakshmi Sharma and Jyothirmayi playing key roles in it, is going on at various locations in and around Kottayam. ‘Ayur Rekha’ unveils a murder mystery.

The unexpected twists and turns in life, attributed to fate or coincidence, depending on one’s line of reasoning, are important factors in the movie that moves between the past and the present to weave an intriguing mosaic of facts and doubts.

This genre of investigative movies has always had a faithful following in Malayalam films and many stars have left their stamp on the role of the cop. Superstars like Mammooty, Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi are some of the actors who have tasted success in their cop-and-robber films.

“The main characters in the film come from a wealthy background and their affluence is evident in the frames as well,” says Manu, the director of ‘Manikyakoodaram’ and ‘Vadakkan Sakhyam.’ The day’s location is a palatial bungalow near Kaduthuruthy, which belongs to Dr. Aparna (Lakshmi Sharma), in the film.

Outline

“Dr. Aparna, who is separated from her husband, Dr.Venugopal (Sai Kumar), lives with her 10-year-old son. She owns a prestigious hospital. The story begins when Aparna is found dead in her bedroom. Initial investigations point to a suicide. An e-mail received by Superintendent of Police Jacob George (Sreenivasan) force the police to reinvestigate the case and it brings to light some intriguing facts,” says the director.

Cinematographer Anandakkuttan goes for a trolley shot as Sreenivasan opens the door and enters the drawing room accompanied by Nedumudi Venu, administrative officer of the hospital, Salimkumar, a policeman, and Niyas, the sub-inspector who first investigated the case. Television actors Pradeep and Nimisha, who take care of the house, have been told to act bewildered as the cops search the house for clues to unlock the mystery.

“The important aspect about my character could be that he has no special mannerisms. Initially, he too believes that it is a suicide, but later he has his doubts when his investigations throw up clues that point to a murder. That encourages him to delve deeper into the case,” narrates Sreenivasan. Urvashi plays his wife in the film.

According to the director, although Urvashi’s role may not be very lengthy, it could be an important character.

Nedumudi Venu plays the “devoted and disciplined” Captain Nair.

The other characters in the film include Triprayar Madhavan (Mukesh), a struggling music director-cum-singer, and his tenant Thankappan Pillai (Jagathy Sreekumar), a senior medical representative. The duo live nearby and Madhavan has a soft corner for Dr.Aparna. Indrajith and Jyothirmayi enact a doctor couple.

‘Ayur Rekha’ is based on a story by K.K.Sudhakaran. The film will reach theatres soon after Onam.

The screenplay and dialogues of the film have been written by Dennis Joseph. Lyrics by O.N.V. Kurup have been set to tune by Sabeesh George. Still photographer is Santhosh Adoor. The film is being produced under the banner of S.K films by Sunny Koonamattom.
