It is that time of year students and patrons of classical music in New Delhi love. Time for the Vishnu Digambar Jayanti, the music festival organised by the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya every August for over half a century. This year, like most, the venue
is Kamani auditorium. The festival begins this Friday at 6.30 p.m. The opening concert will be a vocal recital by Ranjani Ramachandran. Next is a sitar recital by Kushal Das, with Akram Khan on the tabla.
Saturday evening begins with bhajans by students of Gandharva, followed by a Carnatic vocal recital by T.M. Krishna. The closing concert of the evening is Hindustani vocal by Venkatesh Kumar.
Sunday has two sessions. The morning begins at 10 a.m. with a sarangi concert by Murad Ali of Delhi, followed by vocal by veteran Malini Rajurkar. Sunday evening begins with bhajans by Gandharva students, followed by vocal by Shounak Abhisheki. Following him will be flute maestro Hari Prasad Chaurasia, in the closing concert of the festival. The veteran will be accompanied on the tabla by Rashid Mustafa Thirakwa.
