Eye-feasting dance drama

An enjoyable drama on ‘Sri Lalita Sahasranama Vaibhavam.’



Ch. Ajaykumar in the role

It is tough to believe that the dancer performing on the stage is a male. Ch. Ajaykumar, a noted Kuchipudi dancer, is running a dance institution in Vijayawada. He has established himself as a true heir to the legendary Vedantam Satyanarayana Sarma in acting the female roles to perfection. As its anniversary presentation, Ajaykumar and his troupe staged an impressive Kuchipudi dance drama titled Sri Lalita Sahasranama Vaibhavam at Sri Gokaraju Laila Gangaraju Kalavedika.

Lalita, an incarnation of Adi Parasakthi and Pranava Swaroopini, appears as Bindurupini in the sacred Sri Chakram. She is flanked by Goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswathi. Hayagreevasura, a Rakshasa, ruthlessly tortures the Devatas. Unable to bear it, the Devatas appeal to Brahma to save them. Brahma creates ‘Vamri’, who wakes up Maha Vishnu from a deep slumber. In the process, Vishnu’s head is severed by the Dhanush. Dismayed, the Devatas pray the Jaganmata, who links the head with Vishnu’s body, making him alive. Vishnu, in turn, destroys Hayagreevasura, causing Jagat Kalyanam. The dance drama comes to a close with Navavarana Pooja and Lalita Sahasra Namam in dance form.

The dance drama was slick and well enacted by Ajaykumar’s troupe. Ajaykumar was brilliant in the main role and his abhinaya skill came to fore. Fine performances also came from Deepti (Lakshmi), Padush (Brahma), Surekha (Saraswathi), Surendra (Siva), Kalyani (Indra), Hemalata (Vamri) and Suresh (Brihaspathi). The role of Maha Vishnu was finely played by veteran Andhra Natyam dancer Sarada Ramakrishna, and Ch. Srinivas truly lived the role of Hayagreevasura. The script was well written by M. Anilkumar. K. Suryanarayana (vocal), Ch. Srinivas (Nattuvangam) and Sudharani (vocal) did their job with good synchronisation.
