R.K. once more

Cinema Randhir Kapoor on R.K. Films’ tie-up with UFO Moviez.
|
If you have to name one filmmaker of yesteryear whose body of works has a contemporary relevance, it would be Raj Kapoor. Now his films can play in a multiplex near you, for UFO Moviez, the pioneer in the digital cinema business and the world’s
largest digital cinema chain, and R. K. Films have come together to release their golden and popular classic films in digital wide screen format. At first films like Bobby, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Ram
Teri Ganga Maili, Prem Rog and Heena would be released.
Says Randhir Kapoor, “We are constantly being approached by various single-screen theatres and multiplexes with requests to screen our films. However, we possess these films in analogue prints, which have a limited shelf life and whose print quality deteriorates with the passage of time and with repeated screenings. A single print costs 80-85 thousand. And if you have to release 300 prints it doesn’t make business sense. We therefore thought it is appropriate to have them released in digital prints to preserve these much-loved films for eternity. UFO Moviez is a known company which will make these films available through satellite. Now many theatres in the country have the facility to use digital prints. Then there is an option to release them abroad.”
Randhir, the eldest son of the late thespian, says it is not the income that the company will earn from these movies but the sheer pleasure and joy of making classics available to discerning audiences in a good format that has prompted him to take the initiative. “This is the first step and we will continue this effort for the entire library of R. K. Films. Raj Kapoor is one director whose films are still in demand; even youngsters want to watch them.”
R.K. Films have been out of focus for quite some time, but Randhir promises the banner is soon coming up with an announcement. “We are going to start two films to be directed by me.” Refusing to reveal anything further on his film projects, Randhir says he is looking forward to the debut of his nephew Ranbir Kapoor in Sawariya. “I want him to play all kinds of roles and not just the romantic ones.”
