Shatrughan Sinha doesn’t need script-writers like Salim-Javed to come up with memorable one-liners.
“I would try to be a one-film man at a time,” he says when he is asked about doing another film in Bollywood. The last film the former Union Minister acted in was in 2004, ‘Aan: Men At Work.’
Shatrughan, who became, in his own words, from ‘zero to hero,’ is more concerned about launching his sons’ careers at the moment. “Both Luv and Kush would be launched shortly,” says the BJP MP, who was in Kozhikode recently.
Launching his sons
“Luv would be launched soon. Kush has been undergoing training in everything, from dancing and martial arts to acting. Kush actually wants to work behind the camera before becoming an actor. ”
However he wants them to come up on their own. “I don’t want to interfere in their career or dominate them. But if they get stuck or if they face some problem, I will be there. If Amitabh Bachchan can do it for Abhishek Bachchan, why can’t Shatrughan Sinha do it for Luv and Kush?”
“I am planning to do one or two films a year. But I am not interested in doing any stereotyped roles. My role should have some social message. And I need some artistic satisfaction as well.” And Shatrughan has done it all, beginning with small roles, before becoming one of the leading heroes of Bollywood in the 1970’s and ‘80’s. His commanding screen presence, powerful voice and stylised dialogue delivery made him a popular star. He had several hits, including ‘Kalicharan,’ ‘Vishwanath,’ ‘Kaala Pathar,’ ‘Naseeb’ and ‘Dostana.’ But he missed out on two of the biggest hits of Bollywood, ‘Sholay’ and ‘Deewar.’ He was offered the roles in both the films that were eventually done by Amitabh Bachchan.
“I had my own reasons for not doing those roles, but we all make mistakes in our careers,” says Shatrughan.
Talking of more pleasant memories, he says he enjoyed working with some of the most beautiful women in Bollywood. “It was fun working with all of them – Hema Malini, Shabana, Reena Roy, Amrita Singh, Poonam Dhillon…” Among today’s heroines, his favourite is Rani Mukherjee. “Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit are two actors I enjoy watching,” he adds.
He rates Dilip Kumar as the greatest actor of Bollywood. “It is often said that nobody is indispensable, but I feel people like Kishore Kumar are irreplaceable.”
