Kerala State Chalachitra Academy is organising a three-day film festival on two contemporary themes.

Two relevant themes, ‘Human rights in Frames’ and ‘Films of Desire: Sexuality and the Cinematic Imagination,’ mark the start to a three-day film festival organised by Kerala State Chalachitra Academy from September 7 to 9.

“Feature films, short films, experimental films and documentaries will be screened with the themes focussing on works from South East Asian cinema,” says Bina Paul Venugopal, deputy director of the academy.

Films under ‘Human rights in Frames’ is being screened in association with Bangalore Film Society, Creating Resources for Empowerment in Action (CREA), a women’s rights organisation, the South and South East Asia Resource Centre on Sexuality, both based in New Delhi, and Federation of Film Societies of India (South West region).

On human rights

Films scheduled for screening under the first segment include an eclectic melange with films such as ‘Rock Star and the Mullahas,’ ‘The Take,’ ‘Leila Khalid Hijacker,’ which tells the story of a Palestinian woman hijacker and has picked up many awards.

‘John and Jane,’ ‘Sisters in Law,’ a documentary that won the Prix Art et Essai at the Cannes Film Festival, ‘Hearts and Minds,’ ‘Venezuela Rising,’ which tries to feel the pulse of the people on issues like democracy and the popularity of President Hugo Chavez, and ‘First Lessons in Peace’ are some of the other fims in this category.

The second theme ‘Films of Desire’ will comprise films such as ‘Beautiful Boxer,’ which is based on the true story of a boxer who undergoes a sex change operation, ‘Love for Share,’ ‘Locust,’ ‘The Matchmaker,’ and ‘Cut,’ a film which confronts the issue of censorship with a heady blend of tongue-in-cheek humour and music.

It includes ‘Sea in the Blood,’ an intense film about two people who have had to live with deadly illnesses, and ‘One Wife to Another.’

The films, to be screened at at Kalabhavan Theatre in Thiruvananthapuram, is open to the public. Forums will be held on human rights, and sexuality and its representation.
