Demystifying dance Teaching the nuances.
Under the aegis of the local chapter of SPIC MACAY, Ananda Shankar Jayant delivered an informative lecture interspersed with vibrant demonstration at the Vignana Vihara Residential School last week. Dressed like a performing artiste, she took the aud
ience through brief demonstrations.
Explaining the differences in the basic stance, footwork, mudra, bhangima and aangikaabhinaya that mark the seven recognised traditions of classical dance, she demonstrated how all of them merge into one if the da
ncer is able to surface the Saatwikaabhinaya (getting instantly empathetic) while bringing out the emotional content embedded both in the literary and musical phraseology of the compositions.
Being equally proficient in Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam, she was more adroit in bringing out the approach and treatment of the same subject in the two traditional styles. She concluded by elaborating how the letters Bha, Ra and Tha in Bharatam stand conceptualised for Bhava, Raga and Thalam and again with empathy demonstrated how the concept stands justified. She was accompanied by vocalist S. Venumadhav, K. Saikumar on the v
iolin and T.P. Balasubrahmanyam on mridangam.
