In true spirit Traditional music and dance marked the Onam celebrations.
The presence of South Indian communities in Orissa’s capital city Bhubaneswar can be traced back in history. While being in sync with the local culture and tradition, people from other communities have also retained their cultural identity and
the presence of community cultural organisations only enhances this.
One such well-known forum is the four-decade-old Kerala Kala Samhiti that presented an Onam treat to the city’s connoisseurs of classical dance and music last week. As part of the annual Onam celebrations, the organisation announced the opening of a school in Bhubaneswar for South Indian classical dances (Bharatnatyam, Mohiniattam and Kuchipudi), besides Carnatic music. This will be the first school of its kind in the state.
Onam celebrations kicked off at the Jayadev Bhawan with the pleasing traditional dance, Thiruvarthirakali in which married women pray for peace and prosperity of the family. The piece was led by Bindu Reghukumar and set the festive mood of the evening.
As though to show her affinity towards Orissa, her home away from home, young dancer Moushmi Vinesan regaled the gathering with an Odissi dance performance.
The highlight of the evening was, however, the Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi performance by Jisha Damodaran. The dancer will also be training the students at the Samiti’s new school. She exhibited command over both the dance forms. In Bharatnatyam, she presented the tillana based on the dance of Lord Shiva and set to ragam Dhanashree and talam adi. In Kuchipudi, she chose the tarangam in adi talam. The
Kuchipudi segment was based on the stories of Lord Krishna’s childhood pranks.
In the Carnatic music segment, vocalist Saritha Suresh was impressive and presented Ganapati stuti set to Sourashtra ragam followed by the rendition of ragamalika. The evening’s concluding
presentation was a skit by the samhiti members.
