Confidence personified: Madhavi Chandran.
Madhavi Chandran, an up-and-coming danseuse, delighted the audience with an impressive Bharathanatyam recital at Tagore Centenary Theatre, Thiruvananthapuram, which showcased her considerable talent and stamina. Daughter and disciple of Girija Chand
ran of Regatta Cultural Society, Madhavi is currently under the tutelage of Dhananjayans, in Bharathakalanjali, Chennai.
Madhavi began her recital with a mallari set to Gambheera Natta. After an Alarippu set to Chaturasram, she proceeded with a ‘Raama shabdam,’ which was first choreographed for her mother’s arangetram by her guru Sucheedram M.M. Pillai. This was re-choreographed and retuned by guru Dhananjayan.
Stage presence
Madhavi maintained a pleasant stage presence and she was charming in her hasta viniyogas that helped her neatly portray the tales from the Ramayana.
The piece de resistance of the evening was ‘nrutyopaharam,’ a composition by T.V.Gopalakrishnan, depicting the attributes of Lord Ganesha. Set to Nattakurinji and Adi tala, the item stood out for its dexterous presentation.
Brimming with confidence, Madhavi handled all the nuances of the theme and the dance sequences with the maturity of an experienced performer. This was followed by a Lalitadasar kriti in Ragamalika set to Adi tala.
‘Aadidum arasei,’ in Raga Surutti, set to Rupaka tala, is considered a rare composition of Prof. S.Ramanathan on the dance of Nataraja. Madhavi presented it with ease and élan. She displayed the fine training she has received. The padam ‘Aliveni yenthucheyvu,’ in Nattakurinji by Swati Tirunal highlighted the dancer’s ahbinaya.
Madhavi completed the programme with a Nruttta-angahaaram (Thillana) by Ranganaayaki Jayaram set to Raga Desh and Adi tala.
The items were choreographed by Dhananjayans. Dhananjayan’s explanation on each item was interesting and comprehensive. Santha Dhananjayan’s vibrant nattuvangam was an attraction.
