Mansur music fest

The annual two-day Mallikarjun Mansur festival is this weekend

Bangalore Kidney Foundation is back with its annual Mallikarjun Mansur Music Festival, Dhwani. The two-day festival at the JSS Auditorium, Shivarathreeshwara Hall, is on September 22 and 23.

The festival which kicks off on September 22, 6 p.m., begins with a vocal recital by Aarti Anklikar Tikekar, Udayaraj Karpur (tabla), Vyasamurthi Katti (harmonium), and Jagannatha Rao on the tanpura. This year’s award will be given to violinist Pt. D.K. Datar. Pt. D.K. Datar is being awarded the BKF-Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur Award for excellence in teaching Hindustani music and for decades of enthralling music connoisseurs. The award will consist of a citation, shawl, bronze bust of Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur and a purse of Rs. 50,000. This nephew of Pt. D.V. Paluskar, has a gayaki style of playing and has a unique bowing technique. He has given several performances in the country and abroad, apart from winning several prestigious awards. He will also perform at the festival with Pt. Arvindkumar Azad on the tabla and Rajan Mashelkar on the violin and Vijay Kumar Desai on the tanpura.

On September 23, the morning session which begins at 10 a.m. has a vocal recital by Pt. Parameshwara Hegde (vocal), among the leading musicians of Karnataka. This custodian of Pt. Basavaraj Rajguru, will be accompanied by Vishwanath Nakod on the tabla, Ravindra Katoti on the harmonium.

The second half is a flute concert by Pt. Ronu Majumdar with Pt. Durga Das on tabla and Pt. R. Yavagal on tabla. The evening session will have Pt. Rajashekar Mansur’s rendition along with Sanjay Deshpande on the tabla, and Vyasa Murthy Katti on the harmonium. This is to be followed by a tabla solo by Pt. Suresh Talwalkar, the finale of the two-day fest. Milind Kulkarni will accompany him on the harmonium, and Medha Paranjape and Pankaj Bhagavat on vocal.

BKF conducts the Dhwani program on an annual basis as a fund raising event for the one free dialysis a day program.

Till date, BKF has conducted more than 3,500 free dialysis and sponsored about Rs. 21 lakh to the three dialysis centres in Bangalore who are participating in the One Free Dialysis a Day program. The dialysis centres are Narayana Hrudayalya, St. John’s Medical Hospital, Sharada Dhanvanthari Haemo Dialysis Centre.
