Mirdangam maestro passes away
UNDISPUTED TALENT: Dharmala Venkateswara Rao.
Dharmala VenkateswaraRao, a reputed mridanagam artiste passed away, last week. He was 72. Born at Palivela in East Godavari district, he was the eldest son of Dharmala Rama Murthy who was also a great mridangam player and author of several books on the art of mridangam. Venkateswara Rao accompanied on mridangam many leading and top ranking artistes both in India and in the United States He performed extensively on All India Radio and Doordarshan for several decades. He was felicitated in many sabhas and honoured with the title "Mridanga Ratnakara" in the 105th Festival of Sangeetha Vidwat Sabha, Kakinada in 1998. He worked as a lecturer in mridangam in the Government College of Music and Dance, Hyderabad for 25 years and trained students here and in the US. He served as external examiner in several universities and was invited as a judge for important music competitions in India. Venkateswara Rao did research on the art of playing mridangam and co-authored his father's books Mridanga Thatwam, Muktayi Sutra Bhashyam and The Theory and Practice of Mridanga and was instrumental in publishing these books. He has authored a book on Mridangam that is under publication.
