In her honour

GUDIPOODI SRIHARI

A tribute to M.S. Subbulakshmi was marked with the introduction of some young talented singers.

In concert The event in honour of Subbulakshmi’s jayanthi.

Bharata Ratna M.S.Subbulakshmi is still on the minds of all musicians and it’s no wonder they still miss her not only for her great musical genius but also for her way of living and making music a divine experience. Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam(TTD), Department of Culture and Raksha International Foundation, jointly held her Jayanthi at TTD’s premises in Himayatnagar on Sunday evening. And the occasion was rightly used to introduce young musicians of the Government College of Music and Dance, Hyderabad, the oldest music college, to this atmosphere of MS’ memories. The occasion was used to also project their talent in Carnatic and Hindustani music, under the able guidance and direction of the principal of the college, the talented veena playerB. Ananda Rajya Lakshmi. This programme was called Swara Neeranjanam, a musical tribute to the late musical genius. Vedavati Prabhakara Rao a well known vocalist, who also specialised in the rendition of Annamacharya compositions, spoke of her experience of Subbulakshmi’s musical legacy she left behind for us to cherish for ages. She rendered a devotional song Bhavayami Gopalam of Annamayya in Yaman, and said that she sang this kirtana in front of M.S and had received her appreciation. Former DGP and a music lover Prabhakara Rao inaugurated the memorial function, which was also attended by Chairman of the state Cultural Council Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam, P.V. Manohara Rao (former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao’s brother) and Varaprasada Reddy, an industrialist and patron of cultural programmes. The programme opened with a Carnatic vocal group concert with a traditional Ninne Bhajana in Nata, followed by Thyagaraja’s Pancharatna Kirtana, Endaro Mahanubhavulu in Sri ragam. Then the group rendered one of Ganesha Pancharatna kirtanas in raga Malika, popularised by M.S.Other compositions presented were Ambavani in Kiravani and a Tillana in Misra Sivaranjani that gave a finishing touch. Then there was a second group of vocalists who specialised in Hindustani renditions. Their presentation was marked by Hindi Bhajans like He Govinda, He Gopala which Subbulakshmi made famous. All the young vocalists showed they had talent. A third group of vocalists presented Annamacharya compositions. Notable among them were Tandanana Hure, Jagadapu Chanuvula, Alarulu Kuriyaga, Chanchalamaina and Tiru Tiru Javaralu Tittitti, all popular renditions.
