Splendid concert
Shivanjali Temple of Fine Arts recently presented an evening of dance and music at S.N.R. College Kalaiarangam, Coimbatore. The evening began with thunderous blessings from the rain gods. But art lovers did not mind the downpour and enjoyed a splend
id concert of shehnai, hawaiian guitar and tabla.
It started with a bandish in Yaman (Madhyalay composition in Teen taal) followed by a Drut composition in Teen taal. The next item was Surdas’s famous bhajan, ‘Paayoji Maine’. This was followed by a ‘Biraha Geet’ in Mishra Shivaranjani, from Taj Mahal, a Temple of Fine Arts dance production. The concluding piece was a Banarasi dhun in Mishra Bhairavi. The second half comprised a short dance programme by dancers of the Temple of Fine Arts. It began with a ‘Premanjali,’ a lyrical blend of contemporary and classical — a signature welcome item.
The second item was a crisp jathiswaram in Kalyani. The lively dandiya by juniors was a blend of colour, music and fun. The evening concluded with the strains of ‘Ma Saraswathi’ — an arathi dance that combined spiritualism and rhythm. The lighting and sound highlighted the experience.
