Stickler for tradition
Seerkazhi V.R Subramaniam, perhaps the senior most disciple of vidwan Sathur A.G.Subramaniam, passed away recently at the age of 82. He belonged to the tradition of gurukulavasam, having spent a number of years under the tutelage of his guru. Sathur
A.G. as he was known, was a veteran who hardly ever compromised on classical values, and the younger Subramaniam trod the same path with great fidelity.
Capable tunesmith
Seerkazhi Subramaniam was a well known guru having trained many worthy students, and his duet concerts along with his brother Seerkazhi Jayaraman were well received by discerning rasikas in those days, even when the scenario was dominated by the formidable Alathur Brothers. He was a capable tunesmith setting the melodies for many lyrical compositions. He had performed widely throughout the country both in offering vocal support to his mentor and also as a solo kutcheri artiste.
An approved artiste of All India Radio for many years, Subramaniam was the recipient of many titles and top honours from various organisations. In any walk of life one must be truly blessed to succeed. In the case of Seerkazhi Subramaniam, the kindly Providence looked the other way.
