Musicians enthral Tiruchi audience

As part of Vinayaka Chathurti celebrations, a 10-day music festival was organised under the auspices of Sri Nandrudayan Sangeetha Samajam, Tiruchi, September 20-29. The festival began on a colourful note with Sikkil Gurucharan’s vocal reci
tal. He elaborated Bhairavi in detail and sang ‘Yaro Ivar Yaro’ preceded by ‘Yevariki Avatharamu’ in Devamanohari.
On the second day, N. Vijaya Siva gave a concert. His Sankarabharanam raga elaboration and rendering of ‘Akshayalinga Vibho’ stole the limelight.
Both the artistes were accompanied by R.K.Sriram Kumar (violin) and Umayalpuram Mali (mridangam).
Master M. Balamuralikrishna enthralled the audience on the third day, with N.C.Madav on the violin and Salem Srinivasan on the mridangam. His rendering of ‘Theliyaledhu Rama’ in Dhenuka and ‘Cheta Sribalakrishnam’ in Dwijavanti were scintillating. This was followed by O.S.Thiagarajan’s concert. V.V.Ravi was on the violin, Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam on the mridangam and Kovai Mohanram on the ghatam.
O.S.Thiagarajan took Kalyani for elaboration and sang Tygaraja’s ‘Ethavunara.’ Before that he sang Tyagaraja’s ‘Evarani’ in Devamruthavarshini.
Enjoyable Nattakurinji
On the next day, to the accompaniment of M. Chandrasekaran (violin), Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam (mridangam) and Tenkasi Paramasivam (kanjira), N. Ramani gave a flute recital starting with a varnam in Nattakurinji. After elaborating Khambodi, he rendered ‘Evarimata.’ This was followed by an excellent thani avartanam by both percussionists.
On Tuesday, Trichur V. Ramachandran, accompanied by M. Chandrasekaran (violin) and Umayalpuram Mali (mridangam), rendered ‘Vararagalaya (Senchu Khambodi), ‘Radha Mukha’ (Kapi) and ‘Karikalaba Mukham’ (Saveri) with pleasing raga elaborations.
On the next day, to the accompaniment of V.V.Srinivasa Rao (violin) and Trichur Narendran (mridangam), Palakkad T. R. Rajaraman gave a vocal recital. Starting with ‘Vathapi’ in Sahana, the vocalist took Khambodi for main raga elaboration and followed it up with Tyagaraja’s ‘O Rangasayee.’
T.V.Sankaranarayanan, with vocal support from his son Sankar Mahadevan, gave a concert, with T.V.Ramanujacharyalu (violin), B. Harikumar (mridangam) Alathur Raja Ganesh (kanjira). Kalyani raga elaboration by Sankar Mahadevan and rendering of ‘Kamalamba Bhajare’ was the centre of attraction. This was preceded by ‘Bhuvinadhasudai’ in Sri Ranjani, in which Sankar Mahadevan excelled in rendering swaras. The concert came to a close with ‘Kaa Vaa Vaa’ in Varali, ‘Yeppa Varuvaro’ in Jhonpuri and an English note.
On the penultimate day, T.V.Ramprasadh gave a pleasing vocal recital with T.V.Ramanujacharyalu (violin), B. Harikumar (mridangam) and Mohanram (ghatam). The audience was thrilled by his rendering ‘Chalakalla’ in Arabhi and ‘Dinamani Vamsa’ in Harikhambodi.
The festival came to a close with Veda parayanam by eminent Sanskrit scholars. T. S. Ramapriya gave a concert with Kausalya Krishnakumar (violin) and Divya Roopa Sharma (mridangam). Her rendering of ‘Gajavadana’ in Kedaram and ‘Sri Kanaka’ in Kalyani, composed by N.Ch. Krishnamacharyalu was superb.
