Real to reel Aroona Irani was inspired by a real life incident to make “Naaginn…”
Another saga is set to unveil itself on Zee TV today. But this one promises not to toe the lines of your weepy saas-bahu tales. Instead, it’s a story that has been told and retold many times on the silver screen but never on television. “
Naginn…waadon ki agniparikshaa” is about an ichadhari naagin, who transforms herself to take revenge from the family that killed her parents to attain the invaluable naagmani. Starting this Friday, the serial will be telecast thrice a week at 8.30 pm.
Set against the royal background of Rajasthan, the serial, says Tarun Mehra, marketing head, Zee Television, is aimed at capturing the weekend slot. “While we are the leaders in the 7.30 pm – 10.30 pm slot, weekend and afternoon shows have been our weakness. With this show, we are looking to gain some lost market,” he says.
“Naaginn…” will see Shayantani Ghosh play the lead along with Ali Hassan, Aroona Irani, Siddhart Dhawan and Shabaaz Khan, while baby Kushboo plays the young nagin.
The bad guy
In Delhi to promote the show, members of the cast spill some information about the storyline. Actor Ali Hassan who plays Rudra, the bad guy, says, “I am one of the two sons of Aroona Irani who is forever after the naagmani. Even as a kid, I am shown as one who loves reading snakes literature and very intrigued by that creature.”
Aroona Irani, who’s also the producer of the serial, says she chose this subject as it was untouched on television. “Actually I got this idea while watching a real life incident on a news television, where a snake was after a man and had attacked him a couple of times in the past as well. I think snakes are interesting, as there’s a lot of mystery and romance associated with them,” she says.
Permission taken
And yes, the double ‘n’ in the title has everything to do with numerology. Aroona also informs that the requisite permission from Animal Welfare Board were sort before making the serial. “We even have a written note from them,” she says.
Earlier movies like “Nagin”, “Nagina” and “Doodh Ka Karz” have already caught the fascination of the Indian audience. And Aroona herself has been a part of it. “All that previous experience does help. I have even lifted a couple of ideas and characters from there. At the end of the day, I just wanted to make a pure masaledar fantasy show, meant purely to entertain the audience,” sums up Aroona.
