Perfect mastery over footwork

GUDIPOODI SRIHARI

Santosh G. Nair’s dance performance was captivating.

Santosh G. Nair

Young engineering student Santosh G. Nair, proved to be an accomplished Bharatanatyam artiste of acumen at her show at Ravindra Bharati last week under the joint auspices of Srirama Nataka Nikethan and Chaitanya Art Theatres. Disciple of Bharatanatyam gurus of renown - V. S. Ramamurthy and Manjula Ramaswamy, Santosh opened her show with a traditional Pushpanjali that gave the foretaste of her calibre. Then she went for the Ponnaiah Pillai’s popular Pada Varnam Samini Rammanave, in Khamas. Varnam, as such, is known to bring out the talents of the artiste in her presentation of all the essential features of nritta, nritya, natya and abhinaya imbedded in this piece. The theme narrates how the heroine craves for the presence of Brihadeeswara, the presiding deity of Tanjore Temple. While presenting this theme, Santosh went through the display of Madhura Bhakti to the Lord. The speedy foot work in Dhruta kalam was at once arresting, as that marked her footwork skills, while she presents simultaneously the Nayiaka Bhava in her abhinaya, The intermittent statuesque posturing of the Lord and the different mudras that became part of it, were well executed by the young artiste.

Young talent Santosh Nair at her book releasing function.

The other numbers included a Tarangam of Narayana Teertha- Govardhana Giri Dhari. It presented the popular theme of how Srikrishna lifted the Govardhana giri and put it on his finger and protected the people and cattle, bringing them under its shade, were all well reflected in Santosh’s probing Abhinaya and subtle movements. And the scene of Bhagavadgita, in which Srikrishna teaches the Dharma to Arjuna, also came for impressive depiction in abhinaya matching the kirtana rendition from the wings, led by Swetha Prasad. She also presented a Jawali-Smara Sundarangini and a tillana. The nattuvangam,by Ramamurthy and Manjula was compelling with impressive mridangam support of Rajagopalacharya. Saikumar on violin, R.P. Raju on flute were good. Incidentally, a book written by Santosh in English titled Traditional Facets of Indian Dance was also released at the function presided over by Rallabandi Kavita Prasad, a poet and director of the Department of Cultural Affairs. Santosh said that she brought out the book, after some strenuous research with an intention of informing the artistes, some of the features and beauty of dance and to create interest in them. , An art lover and Managing Director of Santa Biotech Varaprasada Reddy released the book.
