Nimble footwork Perala Sravanti

Young Kuchipudi dancer Perala Sravanti, disciple of M. Venkateswara Rao, gave her show at Thayagaraya Ganasabha last week under the auspices of Nritya Darpana. The repertoire comprised of traditional numbers set in the solo dance form. Vinayaka Kautvam opened the show, followed by Koluvaitiva Ranga sayi, a song from Devulalapalli’s ballet Vipranarayana. The nritta and nritya oriented Swarajati was cake walk for her. She also learnt the art of drawing pictures on the powder sprinkled net set on the floor, while dancing on it, and she displayed with her foot work the picture of a peacock, called Mayura Natyam, based on Agama Sastra of temple dances. She was taught by Vyjayantimala, who in turn was the disciple of C.R. Acharya, who practically revived this tradition.

Intapoddaye Ika Vademi Vachune, a Kshetrayya padam, was another attractive number she presented later. It was part of Madhura Bhakti in which she imagines herself as a Gopika and Krishna as her lord. The element of Sringaram also found place in this show. She is a Parakeeya Nayika. She she await for him, wearing all the ornaments; then on his absence gets disappointed and removes all the gold she wears. Her foot work and abhinaya were impressive.

The show was presented under the aegis of Nritya Darpan.

Sri Mallemala, a poet and film maker felicitated her on behalf of the sabha. Srivalli lent vocal support to the Nattuvangam of Venkat. Choreography to all the items was by Venkat.

Sravanthi took part in International dance festivals like the one held at Taipei, Hong Kong and Bangkok. She bagged awards for her skills in picture drawing on the floor and holds CCRT scholarship from the ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India. She is presently doing her Masters in Kuchipudi dance art at Potti Sriramulu Telugu University.
