Kalarajyam celebrated their 37th anniversary with a mythological play
|
The three and odd decade old Kalarajyam, a theatrical organisation, celebrated its anniversary last week at Thygaraya Ganasabha holding a five day festival of dance, drama and music.
The organisation also used the occasion to felicitate some of the personalities of these fields - singer Surekhamurthy, dancer Venkat, theatre personalities Kanneganti Poornachandra Rao, Subhashini and Jagan. However, the festival was marked by the staging of two mythological plays – Srikrishna Rayabaram of Tirupati Venkatakavulu and Satya Harischandra of Balijepalli Lakshmikantha Kavi, more because of the presence of stalwart actors Gummadi Gopalakrishna and Vijayaraju in the cast. Gopalakrishna played Srikrishna in Mahabharata play and Harischandra in another play, teaming with Vijayaraju in the female role of Chandramati, wife of Harischandra. This proved a great combination as both are impressive singers and performers with great histrionic sense. Vijayaraju of Bapatla is specially branded for that role of Chandramati, for he adapted a totally exclusive style of rendition of verses that was at once captivating. This combination of artistes made the last scene of Harischandra, a memorable one.
Srikrishna Rayabaram has three important scenes – the first Sayana Mandiram scene to where Arjuna and Duryodhana go and seek Krishna’s assistance in the ensuing war of Mahabharata. K.Venkata Rao played Sri Krishna in this act and reeled out some good verses. From then it was the show of Gummadi Gopalakrishna who took over the performance of the key role of Srikrishna till the concluding scene of ‘Rayabaram.’The play concluded with Chitamani ending up as devotee of Lord Krishna. Koteswara Rao as Bhavani Sankar rendered some of verses with satirical content impressively. Subhashini as Chintamani left her mark on the production. The other notable program staged in the festival was a dance ballet Kalika Vijayam by Venkat and party.
