On film Reproduction of Gandhi’s visit to Mauritius.
Since October 2, Mahatma Gandhi’s memories continue to sway people not only in India, but in other nations, particularly after the UN declared this day as International Day of Non-violence. Other nations have also tuned to Gandhism, like South
Africa, where Mahatma Gandhi was born, and Maritius, via which country Gandhi travelled back to India from South Africa. He is said to have addressed Indian origin citizens at various places in that country, and Mauritians celebrate the event of Mahatma’s stay in that country for about ten days.
. Mauritius writers’ Association invited Edida Gopala Rao,, who became very popular in our country for his portrayal of the Mahatma on stage and films, as the representative of India . The subject was ‘Peace, the Only Pathway to Sanity’. On his return from Mauritius, Gopala Rao was seen agog with the memories of his visit and the offer by Sri Jagannadh, President of Mauritius, to make a film on the memories of Mahatma’s visit to their nation. The President asked to launch the project as early as possible, under Edida’s direction. “I am now working on this project and would visit the nation with the script,” he informed.
“Most of the people living there are of Indian origin and very hospitable” he recalled. “I met three ministers looking after Art, Culture, Environment and Education, and addressed large gatherings at Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Rabindranath Tagore Institute and Telugu Samskrutika Nilayam, donning myself the look and appearance of Mahatma. There was great thrill everywhere, obviously some recalling the memories of Mahatma. They hold great respect for Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Nehru and Indira Gandhi. The people there recalled how Mahatma advised them to educate their children to oppose all discriminations imposed by the Britishers. “I am now working on this project and will visit the country with the script,” he said. Gopala Rao played the role of Mahatma not only on stage, since 2002, but also played the same role in seven Indian Television films and two feature films. The most recent film in which he played the role is Okka Magadu (under production), featuring Balakrishna in the lead and directed by Y.V.S. Chowdary.
Gopala Rao also addressed a press conference, last week after his return, at the Press Club, Somajiguda.
