Tear wrapped in a smile

LIZA GEORGE

Sreekumaran Thampi is back with a new serial ‘Aliyanmarum Penganmarum’ on Amrita TV.

I don’t think the women of today take challenges lying down.

Family ties: ‘Aliyanmarum Penganmarum’ premieres on October 22 at 7.30 p.m on Amrita TV.

His serials are a far cry from the usual tear jerker. Sreekumaran Thampi who pulled his last serial ‘Amma Thampurati’ off the air as a mark of respect to the lead actor, Sree Vidya, who passed away while shooting for the serial, is back t o the tube with a brand new serial ‘Aliyanmarum Penganmarum.’

“It is a family-based story with a touch of black humour, a tear wrapped in a smile,” says the director.

Revolving around two families, the story focusses on the conflicts within the family. “People are living in a materialistic world where money is everything. In the uphill climb to richness, virtues like compassion and sacrifice are lost. The story tells with a dose of humour how the money that you are chasing soon becomes your enemy.”

Star-studded cast

This star-studded serial, which includes actors like Ganesh Kumar, Chippy, Sukumari, Srilatha, Sathya Priya, Rishaad and Santhosh Kumar, has mimicry artistes Kottayam Nazir and Sajan Pallituruthi donning character roles.

“Kottayam Nazir and Sajan Pallituruthi play Ganesh’s brothers-in-law. It is probably the first time that someone has cast them for not just laughs alone,” says the director.

But while most soaps on the mini screen highlight women as the weaker sex, Sreekumaran’s serials such as ‘Akshaya Patram,’ and ‘Sapatni’ portray them as women of substance.

“I don’t think the women of today take challenges lying down. They are bold and strong and have a fighting spirit. In fact Chippy plays such a woman in this serial. Besides, I too feel that a woman should have a voice and the guts to voice that.”

The script has been co-written by Sreekumaran Thampi and K.R. Meera.

“I needed someone who could give me an insight into the woman’s mind,” says Sreekumaran.

Says Meera, “The story is about a girl’s (Chippy) struggle to keep her family business afloat. That a purely platonic relationship can exist between a man and woman is also a highlight of the story.”

‘Aliyanmarum Penganmarum’ premieres on Amrita TV on October 22 at 7.30 p.m.
