Splendid sound techniques

The Carnatic music concert had sound symphonic support.

Visakha Music and Dance Academy featured a concert of Carnatic music by jalatarangam Kalaapraveena Nemani Somayajulu of AIR, at its auditorium Kalabharati last Tuesday.

Somayajulu, a noted mridangam and ghatam player backed up with more than 30 years of experience has accompanied almost all stalwart exponents of Carnatic music. Somayajulu developed a fascination for Jalatarangam after accompanying Jalatarangam maestro Aniyampatti Dandapani. He mastered the art under the scholarly guidance of veena vidwan D. Srinivas in the art of exposition of Carnatic music.Credited with more than 200 performances on the jalatarangam for almost all noted Sangeetha Sabhas of South. He has also toured Australia, U.S, Russia and so on, performing there. He has also accompanied Sangeetha Kalaanidhi Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman in giving demonstrative lectures at a score of universities in the U.S in 2004.

Sound technique and dexterity in surfacing the intensity of any note of any musical scale with an aesthetic touch marked his concert in Kalabharati. His choice was Vaatapi (Hamsadhvani) with swaram, Sriraaga Pancharatna kriti of Thyagaraja Endaromahanubhavulu, elaboration of Sudhaamayi (Amrithavarshini), Raghuvamsa (Kadanakutoohalam) adorned with scintillating swaram with ghati and yathi variations and an erudite ragam tanam and pallavi in Mohana in Trisra- triputa concluded with swaram in Ragamalika (Suddhasaveri, Sriranjani, Hindolam and Madhyamavathi) filled with thrilling permutations in laya. Local AIR staffer V.V. Ramanamurty on mridangam and G. Venkatesh on morsing not only provided symphonic support but also executed an enthralling thani.
