Blast of a comedy

M.L. NARASIMHAM

‘Bhajantreelu’ promises a ‘non-disturbing’ fare.

Laugh riot Savyasachi, Monica and Sivaji in the film.

Whoever had said it first, ‘laughter is the best medicine’ is right. Commercial cinema has contributed a lot towards this end through the comedies. Veteran producer K. Devi Vara Prasad goes a step forward to say that “we at the Dev i Movie Makers have the year’s best comedy film lined up for this Deepavali.” He is talking about his forthcoming feature, Bhajanthreelu on location at an old temple in Nanakramguda. Directed by ace comedy actor M.S. Narayana, the humour flick stars Sivaji, Savyasachi, newcomers Sushmitha and Shivani in lead roles.

Stickler for perfection

In fact the shoot for the film including the post-production work is complete. A stickler for perfection, Devi Vara Prasad, during the editing, felt that a particular block in a scene shot on comedians Venumadhav and Uthej could have come out better.

He ordered for a re-shoot and the crew assembled at the dilapidated well, near the temple where the scene was filmed earlier. In a movie that guarantees a laugh riot for two and half hours, this few seconds or at the most a minute block might have gone unnoticed and a re-shoot costs money. But then he is accustomed to give the best for the audience. “Venumadhav sports many guises. It is a hilarious scene between him and Uthej. Though the central theme revolves around two brothers (played by Sivaji and Savyasachi) and their sister (played by Monica), every character has its importance.” Vikram took a screen name as Savyasachi, the producer informs.

“One of the highs of the movie is the re-incarnation of Rao Gopala Rao’s contractor character from Muthyala muggu perfected by Kota Srinivasa Rao. It is not a spoof but a tribute to the great actor and to Bapu-Ramana’s creation,” he opines.

The producer is known for the blockbuster Gharana Mogudu, the first Telugu film to gross over Rs. 10 crore in 1992 and also earned Chiranjeevi the title ‘Mega Star.’ “That’s past. Now the time is ripe to make successful movies with low or medium budgets. The industry depends more on the success of such films,” says the producer.

Bhajanthreelu is set to create a new trend among the comedy films with its strength being ‘a non-disturbing film’.

“There is no confusion or disturbance between the characters and also it will entertain and will not disturb the viewers,” smiles Prasad.

He muses over his past hit and says, “Gharana Mogudu starred two heroines one from Mumbai (Nagma) and the other from Kerala (Vani Viswanath). Even now I have such a combination – Sushmitha is from Mumbai and Shivani is from Kerala.”

“The special song on Mumaith Khan we filmed at a lavish set in Ramakrishna Cine Studios and a sentiment song on the brother-sister bonding are among the five melodious numbers composed by Chakri,” he adds.

Both experts in generating comedy in their own inimitable style, Venumadhav and Uthej are re-enacting the role with ease as the camera rolls. The satisfied producer nods his head in approval even as the director says ‘cut’ with a large smile. And it is time to pack up. The film is slated for release on November 1.
