A celestial wedding
Bharatanatyam guru V.S. Ramamurthy and his daughter Manjula Ramaswamy, exponents of Vazhuvur style, staged the popular ballet, Goda Kalyanam, last week at Ravindra Bharati. It was a mythological theme narrating the story of Andal,
who is also known as Goda Devi, a foundling adopted by Vishnuchitta, a devotee and priest of Lord Ranganatha Swamy temple of Srivilliputtur, in Tamil Nadu. The ballet was dominated by a good mix of pure dance nritta and abhinaya interspersed with plenty of dramatic element. It narrates the popular story of how Goda Devi, a great devotee of Lord Ranganatha, another form of Mahavishnu. It began with Periya Alwar Vishnuchitta finding a baby girl in the Tulasivanam. He namesher Goda, which means mala. Goda, in her childish innocence, first wears the garland herself, only to judge how it looks when it is adorned by Ranganatha. One day her father Vishnuchitta notices a strand of hair in the garland and realises that it was his daughter’s act and chides her for her insolence. Vishnuchitta gets a dream and sees Lord Ranganatha bidding him to bring him only those garlands that were worn first by Goda.
