The Guru Sitar maestro Debu Chaudhuri.
It was a lecture-demonstration programme that happily turned into a joint concert between the renowned sitar maestro Pandit Debu Chaudhuri and students of the Blind Relief Association, Delhi.
The sitar maestro deserves to be complimented for the overwhelming interest he was able to create among the students of the Association, besides making them sing along with his sitar.
The inmates further benefited by receiving the basic knowledge in music, thanks to the sitar maestro’s friendly interaction with them.
The programme took a musical twist when the inmates requested the maestro to play raga Ahir Bhairav on his sitar, which he gracefully obliged. He also played the popular bhajan of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi’s ‘Ram Ke Gun Gaa Lijiye’ which the students later learnt and sang with the sitar expert as accompanist.
Raga Prabhat Manjari, which was created by Pandit Debu Chaudhuri on the same lines as ‘Ram Ke Gun’. The maestro taught the students another song, ‘Shakti Banenge Mata’.
In addition, they were made familiar with the basic principles of the rhythm. Towards the end, the entire gathering sang Manna Dey’s famous song in raga Ahir Bhairav ‘Poochho Naa Kaise’.
Practicing the basic scales at varied tempo was a very useful exercise for the students.
One hopes such happy interactions between established artistes and the unprivileged class would go a long way in bringing about a healthy relationship and understanding of each other.
