M. Veerabhadra Rao.
Visakha Music Academy organised a Carnatic recital on harmonium by M. Veerabhadra Rao of Srikakulam on Saturday in Kalabharathi.
A disciple of T.N. Chalapathi Rao and Vankayala Sri Rama Murty, he trained under late S. Balanchandar at Chennai. Skilled in playing violin and rendering vocal, he worked for ten years in Ravindra Bharathi and then in BHU.
Getting off to a tuneful start with Navaragamalika Varnam in the two tempos, he played Vatapi (Hamsadhwani) adorned with brief but beautiful alapana and swaram in the two speeds, Naadatanumanisam (Chittaranjani), briefly elaborated versions of Sarasasamadana (Kapinarayanani), Samajavaragamana (Hindolam) and Evarani Nirnayinchivira (Devamrutha varshini) before he eleborated Jhanamosagarada (Poorvikalyani) and Endukudayaradu (Todi). Raghuvamsa (Kadhanakutuhalam) suffixed with elaborate swaram with gathibedham in laya in between left a scintillating effect.
Overall, it turned out to be an attractive showcase of technique and dexterity on harmonium. His disciple master Kartik on keyboard, M.R.K. Prasad and his daughter MV Meher Kalyani on mridangam lent commendable support. The Thani on mridangam was knowledgeable.
