Released for the festival

Come Deepavali and magazines line the stands with their special editions. A sample…

Offering a sumptuous fare

A smiling Vijay, actor, greets the readers of this special issue of Ananda Viaktan . “Gangai Nadhikaraiyinile…” An extensive article by P. Swaminathan describes the religious sanctity of the holy city of Varanasi with the resplendent images of Annapoorneswari and Viswanatha adorning the pages. Beautiful pictures of Lord Rama and Kubera, repository of wealth, add to the bhakti content.

The film front offers a sumptuous fare. Director Amir looks back on the past and opens up on his friendship with director Bala. K.P.Ramakrishna, substitute for MGR and Nambiar share his experiences.

Celluloid voyage

Writer Ashokamitran takes the readers on a celluloid voyage. S. Rajath meets Pithambaram, make-up man for MGR and NTR. A profile of M.R.Radha by Gunalan and Arur Das’s moving account on Kannambal are among other features that make this segment interesting.

Short stories by television personalities is an attraction of this festival edition. Appusamy, the endearing old man of Backiam Ramasamy’s creation makes his appearance to delight his fans.

It is interesting to read S. Rajath’s snippets on how VIPs, ranging from film stars to Ministers and politicians carry themselves during flights.

The writer’s observations of their preferences, idiosyncrasies and mannerisms make for a novel feature. As the crowning glory of th Vikatan Centenary Celebration comes an essay on Jeeva by Ilaaga Bahrati.

Titbits and jokes make the glossy journal worth picking up.

Sri Sai Margam

This quarterly, dedicated to the saint of Shirdi, combines the occasions of Deepavali and Vijayadasami, the day Baba attained mukti, to bring out a special edition (Rs. 99). It was released at the Chennai Chitlapakkam Sai temple.

Essays, short stories, snippets, poems… the contents are predictably oriented towards Shirdi and Baba. A gallery of Sai devotees and a pictorial depiction of Baba’s life history give the issue a special touch.
