The multi dimensional contribution of Papanasam Sivan in the field of music during the 20th Century had made him a legend in his own time. People still remember with nostalgia his ‘margazhi bhajanai,’ when along with a number of devotees,
circumambulating the Kapaleeswarar Temple at Mylapore braving the cold weather, he made the streets reverberate with ecstatic devotion and spiritual upliftment.
The album traces Sivan’s personal life, inspiration for music, love for Tamizh, classical contribution, his greatness as a musician and guru, his expertise as a film music composer, flair for writing musical plays, (Isai Natakam), dance and profound scholarliness.
Crystal clear
The narration by P. C. Ramakrishna is crystal clear. Efforts to propagate Sivan’s works and the inheritance of his tradition are brought into focus. Snippets of Sivan’s classical compositions rendered by the all time greats of yesteryear, such as Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, G. N. Balasubramaniam, Madurai Mani Iyer, D. K. Pattammal, M. S. Subbulakshimi, M. L. Vasanthakumari, D. K. Jayaraman, Maharajapuram Santhanam and K. V. Narayana Swami regale the rasika.
The catchy film songs featured in ‘Haridas’ ( M. K. Tyagaraja Bagavatar; N. C. Vasanthakokilam), ‘Meera’ (M. S. Subbulakshmi), ‘Sakuntalai,’ (G. N. Balasubramanian; M. S. Subbulakshmi), ( N. C. Vasanthakokilam, ‘Desa Sevai’ (D.K.Pattammal), ‘Bhoolaka Rambai’ (Kothamangalam Seenu) ‘Krishna Bhakti’ (P.U. Chinnappa), ‘Aararo’ (M.L.Vasantha Kumari) and ‘Chakradhari’ (V. Nagaiah) that have been rendered by the artistes when their voices were in mint condition, are in a class by themselves. Contemporary musicians Sanjay Subramaniam, Nithyasree Mahadevan, Ashok Ramani (grand son of Sivan), Neyveli Santhanagopalan, S. Sowmya, and N. Vijay Siva have sung as many as 35 songs with optimum emotion and involvement.
The appreciative comments of Sivan’s contribution by Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, S.V. Venkatraman, S. Rajam, Rukmini Ramani, Desikar, Shankara Menon and Subbudu reflect the multifaceted achievements of the great in no uncertain measure.
Worthy endeavour
The Sivan Arts Academy and the Papanasam Sivan Rasikar Sangam are successfully propagating the works of the master by organising concerts by leading vidwans and arranging lec-dems.
The good work continues because of the tireless efforts of Rukmani Ramani and her son Ashok Ramani. Lalgudi GJR. Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi have played a couple of songs in characteristic Lalgudi style.
The programme includes two songs by Rukmani Ramani and “Karpagame” in madhyamavati by a group of artistes like Sethalapatti Balasubramaniam, Rukmani Ramani, Neela Ramamurthi, Ashok Ramani, S. Sowmya and others. This praise worthy album produced by Ashok Ramani would benefit the spectrum of music in general, and performing musicians in particular.
