Koodiyattom is one of the oldest surviving Sanskrit theatre traditions of India.
Over the centuries, Koodiyattom performers have explored several illustrious poets such as Bhasa, Sakthibhadra, Kulasekhara and Bodhayana. But it still remains a mystery why the monumental works of a master poet like Kalidasa are not in the repertoire of Koodiyattom.
Kalidasa’s works
Natanakairali adapted Kalidasa’s works such as ‘Abhijjnana Sakuntalam’ and ‘Vikramorvaseeyam’ into their repertoire by staging them as Koodiyattom performances.
Since 2005, the company has been celebrating a festival on Kalidasa’s plays at Irinjalakuda.
Natanakairali is organising a three-day festival, presenting an edited version of the Koodiyattom play ‘Sakuntala’ (‘Abhijnana Sakuntalam’) on November 19, 20, and 21 at Natanakairali Ammannur Chakyar Madhom, Irinjalakuda.
