When life plays tricks
Machakkaran
Genre: Romance
Director: Thamizhvanan
Cast: Jeevan, Kamna, G.M.Kumar, Sobraj, M.S.Bhaskar, Santhanam, Vaiyapuri, Mayilsamy and Malavika.
Storyline: About a young man, who is generally misunderstood, and a young girl, who falls in love with him.
Bottomline: Watchable, but for some rough edges.
The start — the film opens on a festive note — and the introduction of the main characters raise the expectations of the viewers. In fact, the audience interest is sustained till the intermission. But the proceedings sag in the second hal
f, leaving several loose ends.
The well-meaning gestures of young Vicky end up showing him in poor light. With the result, nobody, not even his family members, gives him respect. Shivani (Kamna) understands him and showers affection which blossoms into love. Her father and brother arrange for her marriage with Vicky, whose father Thangavel (Vinodraj) plays spoilsport.
The first half of the film is fast-paced. The director has worked hard to flesh it out with many interesting incidents and giving the necessary twists and turns to make it worth while. However, by making the lovers run around with the police official brother hot on their heels, he lets go of the initiative in the second half.
The crew
Jeevan as Vicky has done a neat job but he must pay better attention to makeup. His body language is good and his acting has definitely improved. Kamna is beautiful but has a long way to go in terms of acting. The role of the village big shot perfectly fits G.M.Kumar, script writer in real life. Vinodraj (father of Vikram in real life), who plays the hero’s father does his work with finesse.
Shobraj as the inspector is adequate. Malavika’s dance hardly adds value to the film. Where Santhanam and Vayapuri partially succeed, Mayilsamy and M.S.Bhaskar score cent per cent.
Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score is catchier than his songs. It is the work of A.Venkatesh which enhances the frames and the songs in foreign locations make for good viewing. Thamizhvanan’s dialogue is crisp but he should have worked more on the screenplay.
