SPECIAL A round-up of the festival editions.
|
Wholesome: Deepavali special issues.
A look at what some of the leading Tamil periodicals have offered this festival:
Kalki
To begin with, it is a delight to read Rajaji’s foreword to his ‘Chakravarthi Thirumugan.’ A highlight of the issue is the depiction of the four stages of Mahavishnu’s Krishna avatar, the special o
pening with the Paramacharya’s crisp commentary on Kannan.
J.S.Raghavan’s write-up on P.G.Wodehouse gives the edition that special touch.
‘Crazy’ Mohan’s poem (yes, the renowned playwright has revealed yet another dimension of his creative talent) is enhanced by Veda’s lovely sketches.
The article on Akshar Dham is accompanied by exquisite pictures.
Pages have been allotted for Mangaiyar Malar and Gokulam — sister publications of Kalki. Short stories, humour-laced essays and titbits complete the rich miscellany the issue (Rs.100) offers.
Kalaimagal
The cover is adorned by a beautiful picture of Lakshmi Hayagrivar. An article by Velukkudi Krishnan explains the salient features of the deity.
A write-up by the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and an article on the Puducherry Mother make interesting reading.
So does the account of how Maharishi Ramanar handled a gang of burglars, who invaded the ashram.
The literary content is enriched by the profiles of K. Rajnarain and Chellappa.
Amudha Surabhi
The special edition of this periodical, known for its adherence to classicism, comes with a message of Srivan Satagopa Sri Narayana Yatindra Mahadesika.
The cover has Gopulu’s charming picture where Yashoda cajoles child Krishna to have a bath. The visual is interpreted by C.V.Seshadri.
For those with a spiritual bent of mind, the issue offers several articles including those on Guru sthalam Thakkolam and Thiruvalidayam by Vasantha Sureshkumar. A riveting write-up is on the Puducherry Mother’s secretary, ‘Udhar’ Pinto.
Publisher ‘Vanati’ Thirunavukkarasu’s account on Rajaji and Sankar Venkatraman’s memories (with pictures) of Kalki’s ‘Thyagabhoomi’ are interesting.
For humour the reader has Backiam Ramasamy’s narration. The issue does not disappoint readers, who opt for wholesome reading.
Amman Dharisanam
A publication of Sringeri Sarada Peetam, the issue (Rs.50) contains articles, short stories, poems and anecdotes all woven around the Math and the grace of the Acharyas.
Of special mention are the contributions of Sri Abhinava Vidya Tirtha Swami, Swami Omkarananda and ‘Cho’ Ramaswamy.
Gopura Dharisanam
As the name indicates the journal is dedicated to temples and matters related to them.
Reading the journal is akin to going on a pilgrimage to places, familiar and not so well-known.
The essays, travel accounts and poems are rich in content.
Rajaji’s convocation address (1948) at the Benaras University, the write-ups on Maharajapuram Visvanatha Iyer, the late Saavi, Radha Bhaskar’s article on the Tamils’ contribution to Carnatic music and so on give the special variety. The edition (Rs.100), in short, offers substantial material to read and savour.
Om Shakti
A mixture of essays, interviews (with Ilaiyaraja and Padma Subrahmaniam), stories and poems by renowned writers make up this special edition (Rs.45).
Ladies’ Special
The edition has something interesting to offer for all age groups.
Poems, short stories, skits and travel accounts make the journal (Rs.90) eminently readable. Colourful pictures of Rathnagiri Murugan, Hayagrivar, Saibaba and so on adorn the pages.
