Balancing act

LIZA GEORGE

Saji Surendran’s ‘Madhavam’ on Surya TV is a love story with a difference.

I believe people prefer stories that revolve around families and has a bit of romance in it.

“It is a triangular love story that has both mother and daughter falling for the same man,” says Saji Surendran on ‘Madhavan,’ the serial he is directing. Rekha Mohan plays the mother while debutante Annie Zarin plays the daughter. Anoop Mohan plays their love interest.

“Vandana Shankar (Rekha) is a professor and Kishen (Anoop) is a research scholar. Although they start off on the wrong foot they soon discover that they share the same wavelength and a relationship of sorts develops between the two. However, they both fail to realise that Meera (Annie) has a crush on Kishen. What happens in this triangular relationship forms the rest of the story.

Twist in the story

“There is a twist in the story when Meera discovers Vandana is not her birth mother. Ganesh Kumar plays Rekha’s eccentric husband,” says Saji, who is known for his tales on romance and familial bonds.

“Well I think people are tired of tear-jerkers. I think they are looking for a balance – not too much melodrama, not too much comedy and not too much emotion. I believe people prefer stories that revolve around families and has a bit of romance in it,” says Saji.

He also tries to ensure that his serials do not have the same story lines and does not mind waiting for such scripts to come his way. Saji’s debut into serial direction was through ‘Aalippazham.’

“But I was not new to the field,” says this director who has assisted director Viji Thampi on serials such as ‘Black and White,’ ‘Mahatma Gandhi Colony’ and ‘Silence.’ Saji decided to sail solo by directing telefilms such as ‘December Mist’ and ‘Vilolam’ which won the State Best Telefilm Award.

Three is company: Stills from ‘Madhavam.’

“The awards boosted the faith I had in myself, and ‘Aalippazham’ came. Megham’ came next, but it is ‘Mandharam’ that I hold close to heart. It is the first time a man gives his heart to his love literally in a soap story,” says Saji.

‘Daya,’ which followed, met with a lukewarm response. The director is now looking forward to crossing over to movies, “although discussions are going on, nothing has been finalised as yet.”
