Soulful in parts
The cultural programme jointly organised by the G.R. Government College of Music and Dance, Vijayawada, and the Vedik Foundation of India, at the Gokaraju Laila Gangaraju Kala Vedika, was an average fare but parts of it were satisfactory.
The programme began with a brief but impressive vocal concert by Manda Krishna Mohan, an able singer and staffer of the music college. He has a tuneful voice and fine manodharmam. Krishna Mohan rendered Sogasu Jooda Tarama in Kannadagowla, Devadi Deva of Mysore Vasudevachar in Sunada Vinodini, Narayanate Namo Namo of Annamayya in Behag and an Ashtapadi (Radhika Krishna) in Chakravakam.
Devadi Deva was rendered with good alapana and swaras. Krishna Mohan was ably supported by P. Nageswara Rao on violin and M. Vijayakumar on mridangam. This was followed by a Kuchipudi dance presentation by students of the college. The dance was directed by Natyacharya Bhagavathula Venkatarama Sarma. There was nothing special about this performance.
The last item of the evening was a melodious instrumental ensemble with the participation of K.S. Govindarajan, principal of the music college on the veena, lecturer V. Krishnaveni on the violin, Indrakeeladri Sarma on flute, M. Vijayakumar on mridangam and V. Amritkumar on tabla.
The group played Natakuranji varnam, Vatapi (Hamsadhvani), the pancharatna keertana
Endaro (Sriragam), Patnam’s Raghuvamsa Sudhambudhi (Kadana Kutuhalam) and Annamayya’s Adigo Alladigo in Madhyamavathi with admirable co-ordination.
