Anniversary
Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer Trust, T. Nagar, Chennai (Ph: 2433 6504) is celebrating its 22nd anniversary and presenting its memorial award to Guruvayur Dorai on November 24, 5 p.m., at Srinivasa Sastri Hall, Luz, Chennai. The award comprises Rs. 10,000 in cash, a gold medal, a citation and a shawl. Senior musicians Madurai Balasubramaniam (vocalist) and Govindarajan (ghatam vidwan) will be honoured with a cash award of Rs. 2,000.
The ‘Youth Awards for Excellence’ will be presented to Saketaraman, Pudukkottai Ambikaprasad, Mannargudi Subramanian and Sree Sundarkumar. N. Viswanath, Editor-in-chief, Sarigamapadhani, will inaugurate. the festival. S. Balasubramanian, chairman, City Union Bank Limited, will preside. T.K.Govinda Rao and Kalidas will felicitate the awardees.
The Trust has organised a music festival at Sri Parvathi, 28/160, Eldams Road, Alwarpet, November 25-28.
The Trust has also organised a special programme, Laya Madhura, to be presented by Thiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam, on November 24. The programme at 6.30 p.m. will be held at Srinivasa Sastri Hall, Luz, Mylapore.
Nartaka dance fest
Natyanjali Trust is celebrating its 28th anniversary with the ‘Nartaka dance festival,’ an all-male Bharatanatyam event, November 23-35 at R.K.Swamy Auditorium, Mylapore. C.V.Chandrasekar will inaugurate at 5.45 p.m. Nandini Ramani will honour C.V.Chandrasekar with the first Nartaka Award instituted in memory of Jayalakshmi Satagopan on November 25. The festival will feature dance recitals by K. Shanmuga Sundaram, L. Narendra Kumar, Binesh Mahadevan, A. Lakshman and C.V.Chandrasekar.
Natya Utsav
The Chennai Kendra of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is conducting its Sangeeta Naatya Utsav from November 24 to December 20, at its auditoriums in Mylapore. In the main auditorium, 24 vocal and nine instrumental programmes are scheduled and in the mini auditorium, 24 up and coming artistes are to perform. Sundara Rajan, chairman and managing director, Indian Bank, is inaugurating the festival at 6.15 p.m. This will be followed by a concert, ‘Madhura Dwani,’ by T.V.Gopalakrishnan and group at 7 p.m. Thematic group presentations by major Bharatanatyam gurus will be a special feature this year. Tirunakshatram
Sri Arulalapperumal Emberumanaar Kainkarya Sabha is celebrating the annual Sathumarai and 1010th Tirunakshatram (birth star Karthigai Bharani) of Sri Arulalapperumal Emberumanaar at Sri Pandavathoodar Sannadhi, Big Kanchipuram, on November 23, 12.30 p.m. onwards. Tirumanjanam will be followed by Tiruveedhi purappadu, rendering of Veda parayanam and Divya prabandham.
Birth centenary
The birth centenary of Sanskrit scholar, U.Ve.Navalpakkam Ammani Sundara Rajagopala Thathachariar will be celebrated at S. Navalpakkam, Vandavasi taluk, on November 23 and 24. A descendant of Ayyakumaa Thatha Deiskar, he was a contemporary of U.Ve.D.T.Thathachariar Swamy and U.Ve.Uttamur Veera Raghavachariar Swamy, He dedicated his life to imparting the knowledge of sastras to students at the Oriental College, Tirupati. The celebration will include Veda and Divyaprabhanda parayanam and vidwat sadas.
