Spirituality with literary flavour

Spreading the word of Annamayya’s lyrics.

Garimella Balakrishna Prasad has been associated with the rendering of Annamayya krithis for a long time. Annamacharya krithis ooze Sahitya Sourubham (literary flavour) and the listeners always try to find the message each lyric carries. Prasad has b een rendering them for the last four decades. His name is synonymous with Annamacharya compositions. A talented classical musician, he has set to music more than three hundred compositions of Annamayya and rendered them. He appeared last week for an open programme at Harihara Kala Bhavan organised by Venkat Arts Academy, Hyderabad, which specialised in also creating a library of Annamacharya kirtanas. Prasad was the student of the first batch of Annamacharya project launched by TTD in the year 1978.

He retired recently after serving it for three decades. It was almost a packed auditorium with music lovers who sat through the two-hour concert that was a mix of popular and fresh numbers. "Anni Mantramulu Inde Aavahinchenu" in Amruthavarshini, Ghora Vidarana Naarasimha in Ragamalika, Idivo Unnaramu in Suddha Dhanyasi were all fresh numbers he rendered.

He also added the popular ones like Tandanana Ahi in Bowli and Kondallo Nelakonna in Hindola. There were also new compositions that were not set to music earlier - Indulona gala sukhamu Inte Chalu in Desh, Inniti Moolambeeswarudu in Malhari, Ettugude Pendliyogamu in Hari Kambhoji, Ninnu goodina Vibhuni in Chandrajyothi, which he scored now and presented. Prasad has in fact composed more than 500 Annamayya Sankeerthanas and many of them are already on the lips of many upcoming singers.

Every composition had that moderate classical touch depending upon the Sahitya element. He even gave a brief sketch of Harikambhoji before he went for a composition Yetthugade in it. The ragas he used suited the mood of the substance of the krithies. G. V. N. Anil Kumar, Prasad’s son, joined his voice with his father and proves to be a young man to be watched. An audio-album of Balakrishna Prasad with the title Annamayya Achyutu Saranu was released at brief function.
