Collector’s mission

VIJAY GEORGE

‘Collector’ has Suresh Gopi acting again as a tough officer on a mission. This time he takes on the real estate mafia.

BRAIN VS BRAWN: Suresh Gopi takes on the mighty and the powerful in `Collector.'

“He is honest and tough; a man with a mission.” That is how film director Anil C. Menon describes Avinash Varma, the hero of his latest film, tentatively titled ‘Collector.’

According to Anil, the theme and the backdrop of the film might remind viewers of some of the recent happenings in Kerala. Suresh Gopi dons the title role of the collector.

Avinash takes on the mighty and the powerful in this action packed entertainer, the shooting of which is going on at various locations in Kochi.

Hospital scene

The location for the day is a consulting room in Gautam Hospital. Cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa, who makes his debut in Malayalam films, gives instructions to his assistants regarding the light arrangements.

The crowd of curious spectators become animated as they spot Suresh Gopi. The director wants Suresh Gopi to look composed even as a bandage is being removed from his hand. Once the shot is canned, associate director Sunil Karyattukara reads out the dialogues for the next shot that shows the collector warn a senior doctor in the hospital.

“As huge concrete structures mushroom in the city, all under the guise of development, there are several issues that cause concern. In my film, the collector faces some stiff challenges from the real estate mafia as he insists on stringent measures for safety reasons. The highly influential gang of thugs accentuate the personal problems in his life and the collector has to move against his brother as well,” says Anil.

Says Suresh Gopi who has successfully played the role of the vigilante and the activist in many films: “We have certain responsibilities as a citizen and there are some privileges that one can use as a celebrity such as voicing our concern for genuine issues. Perhaps the audience likes me doing these kinds of roles.” The actor has just completed the shoot for Shaji Kailas’ film ‘Boot.’

‘Kichmani MBA’ saw Suresh in a different role; one that was accepted by the audience. Suresh says he will continue to experiment with his characters.

Mohini acts as the mayor of Kochi and Kannada actor Yamini Sharma as the assistant commissioner of police. Still photographer is Saleesh Peringottukara.

‘Collector,’ being produced under the banner of ACube Productions, will be released in January.
