Raconteur: Director Siby Malayil.

His profile boasts some of the best films in Malayalam. Yet, as his latest offering, ‘Flash,’ is all set to hit the theatres, director Siby Malayil says: “I am tense as this film comes after a gap in my career.”

Mohanlal and Parvathy play the lead in ‘Flash,’ which has been scripted by S. Bhasurachandran.

Mystery flick

Says Siby: “The film is narrated amidst a family background. Also, it involves a mystery. When I heard the storyline, I knew that it had the elements of a theme that the audience would expect from me. It has some gripping moments as well.”

Midhun Madhav (Mohanlal) is an I.T. professional based in Mumbai who has a penchant for psychiatry. He is brought to Kerala to solve a problem involving Dhwani (Parvathy), an engineering student.

“Mohanlal has played characters of various shades in my earlier films and most of them resembled people whom we come across in our daily lives. But his character in ‘Flash’ is a man with a modern outlook and is quite different,” says the director, who feels that the actor is a real director’s delight, considering his natural acting style and spontaneity.

Siby adds that several names were considered for the role of Dhwani, but when they decided to look for a fresh face, Parvathy was selected.

“She has done a rather complex role in ‘Note Book’ and is a quick learner. The whole story revolves around her character and she has put in a lot of homework to get into the nuances of her role.”

The main locations of the film were Kanhangad and Kozhikode, “ as we could find some good locations there.”

Sajan Kalathil, who wielded the camera for ‘Nivedyam,’ is the cinematographer of ‘Flash.’ Songs have been composed by Gopi Sundar. The cast includes Sai Kumar, Siddique, Indrajith, Jagathy Sreekumar and Shamna among others.

Looking back, the director says he has seen both the highs and lows in life. But he prefers to view it philosophically, saying that all those experiences have been crucial in shaping his career as a filmmaker and, more importantly, as a human being.

Siby is rather hesitant in disclosing his impending project that is being planned with Lohitadas and Mohanlal, which is expected to happen next year. The trio had come out with some memorable films earlier, which include ‘Kireedom,’ ‘Chenkol,’ ‘His Highness Abdullah,’ ‘Bharatham’ and ‘Dasaradham.’

“Obviously there will be lots of expectations when we come together and we are cautious about it all as we approach the project,” he says.

The other films in the pipeline include a project with new faces in the lead and another one with Mammootty, which is in the discussion stage.
