Tuneful melodies Mohana Krishna
For once we had the opportunity of listening to Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna’s film songs rendered by Balamurali’s disciple D.V.Mohanakrishna.He has almost the same vocal culture as his guru. This rare event was held last week in the presence of Balamuralikrishna, at Lalitha Kala Thoranam.
The compositions were of Rajeswara Rao Pendyala Nageswara Rao, K.V.Mahadevan, Kodandapani, Ilayaraja, Chakravarthi, Satyam, Ramesh Naidu, Keeravani and others. The whole concept was to present songs with a classical element. After listening to the musical programme with a mix of Balamurali and S.P Balasubrahmanyam songs, one gets a feeling that here is one singer, who can render pure classical songs almost in the style of Managalampalli Balamuralikrishna and that the film industry in Hyderabad can use him.
Mohanakrishna is already famous in the Carnatic music circles and like Balamurali, he too can render filmi songs with classical touch, if necessary, sticking to ragabhava. Balamuralikrishnalater said at a brief felicitation function, that his wish to listen to his own film songs rendered by some one else has been fulfilled. While Mohanakrishna sang eight songs, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam rendered a dozen.
The event began with a Vinayakasthuti -Sri Sakala Ganadhipa and the next number was Karunamayi Sarada, the one that Balamurali and Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana sang for a scene in the film Pavitra Hrudayalu. Their voices are so similar that it is difficult to detect whose line is what. From then on Balu and Mohanakrishna rendered alternately.
S.P. Balasubrahmanyam
The choice of songs by Mohanakrishna were: Varamosage Vanamali from the film Bhakta Prahlada, Salalitha Raga Sudha from Nartanasala, then a song from Sivaji Ganesan’s Karna, Vasanta Gali from the film Andhra Mahavishnu, Mouname Neebhasha from the film Guppedu Manasu and Etiloni Keratalu from Bhakta Prahlada.
The highlights of Balu’s renditions were Antaa Ramamayam from the film Ramadasu, Lalithakalaradhanalo of Ramesh Naidu, Chengavi Cheerakatti and Mallelu Pooche Vennelu Kache. All his songs are representative of different music composers. He rendered both classical and light, while Mohanakrishna stuck to Balamurali’s songs. It appears that Balamurali rendered about 20 songs in films.
This concept of presenting film songs with classical base arose from a programme Mohanakrishna presented at Ravindra Bharati sometime back, with the title `Swara Raga Sammohanam’. Taking a raga and rendering a Kirtana in it and then following it with a film song in the same raga.
The choice of songs by these two singers was quite contrast. Surekha murthy, Nitya Santoshini and others also sang for some songs. .
