Small yet powerful

MANGALA RAMAMOORTHY

The POGO Amazing Kids Award 2007 was a star studded event.

Star power Host Aamir Khan with Saroj Khan

Good things indeed come in small sizes. The POGO Amazing Kids Award 2007 made one thing clear – never underestimate the power of kids. There’s a thing or two we can learn from each of the 24 kids nominated to the eight categories. Seeingthe unique talent and confidence they exude you realise that age doesn’t have anything to do with capability.

The sparkling green and orange eco-friendly set at Film City, Mumbai, also had a message to spread. It was an attempt by the channel to spread ecological awareness as part of their ‘Go Green’ theme.

So what if it was a kid’s award show, it had all the razzmatazz and glamour that you can expect from afilm award ceremony. The only difference – this one rewarded the real winner. And making his debut as host of an award ceremony was none other than actor Aamir Khan, who turned director with “Taare Zameen Par”, releasing this Friday. Otherwise absent from all award ceremonies in India, the reticent actor made this one an exception.

Wearing his attitude lightly, he mingled with the kids enough to become one of them. But for once, he had to share the limelight with his co-host of the evening, the adorable Darsheel, the lead child star in the film. The popular hosts of the channel, Niall, Chinu and Rob, joined the two at different intervals to take forward the proceedings. Rob at his creative best presented a stunning painting of Aamir Khan, that he created upside down.

Sukhwinder Singh

The winner in each category was decided by a well-known personality from the particular field.

A host of celebrities made their presence to encourage the kids and give away the prizes that included child benefit policies worth Rs.five lakh each, along with other goodies. Ace choreographer Saroj Khan gave away the award for the best dancer to the little Pranati Goturi, a Kuchipudi dancer from Hyderabad, while singer Kumar Sanu found the best singer in Kolkata’s Arpan Mukherjee. Cricketer Vinod Kambli gave away the award to Mumbai swimmer Surabhi Tipre for the best sportsman. An award ceremony without an entertainment value? Nope! Children from the Shaimak Davar Junior Dance Company were the first to electrify the set with high-voltage performances to popular numbers like “Partner”, “It’s Rocking” and “Maujja”.

Later during the show, the kids came back to dance to the beautifully choreographed “Bum Bum Bole” but this time they were joined by Darsheel. The kids erupted in joy when Aamir decided to join them to shake a leg in his irrepressible manner.

And when everyone thought all was over, in came singer Sukhwinder Singh to end the event with a bang. He sealed the mood with his “Dard-e-Disco” and “Chak De India”.
