Vidwan remembered

Strains of delight Kanyakumari performing in Vijayawada.

The Gayaka Sarwabhowma Sangeeta Parishat founded in memory of Parupalli Ramakrishnaiah Pantulu, organised a five-day music festival at Sri Sivaramakrishna Kshetram, Vijayawada, marking 125th Jayanthi of Parupalli. On the first day, there was a splen did violin solo by Kanyakumari. Commanding and melodious music flowed from her bow. She started with Mahaganapathi in Nata and followed with a version of Harikambohoji in which she played Dinamani Vamsa and closed it with impressive swara kalpana. Bhavayami Raghuramam the popular ragamalika of Swathi Thirunal was played with brief delineations of ragas figuring in the composition. Other important items in Kanyakumari’s concert were Namo Narayana in Karnaranjani and Hiranmayim in Lalitha.

For the main piece of the concert, Kanyakumari took up a scholarly ragam, tanam, pallavi in Todi and Nagaswaravali tackling the ragas with expertise. At the close of the pallavi a rousing tani was presented by mridangam player M.L.N.Raju and ghatam artiste M.Haribabu.

The Parishat left the stage to youngsters on the second day. The youngsters showed fine and promising talent in the thirty minutes given to each. P. Poojitha’s veena was the first. Her last item was a tillana in Brindavani. Six-year-old K.Aravind thrilled the audience with his mridanga vinyasam in Misra Chapu talam.

Sripoornima showed exceptional talent playing flute. She played Kambhoji varnam and compositions in ragas Hamsadhvani, Jaganmohini, Kanada and Revathi. Fine laya gnanam marked her recital. Malladi Brothers Sriramprasad and Ravikumar presented a sumptuous vocal duet. They were in great form and kept the audience glued to their seats.Annavarapu Ramaswamy’s violin solo came as a fitting finale to the five day musical feast.
