Engrossing Kathak recital

Grace and technical finesse marked the performance

RIGHT MOVES Mukti Sri.

London-based Indian Kathak exponent Mukti Sri gave a scintillating performance at Ravindra Baharati last week. She opened with Kasturi Tilakam, a popular sloka from Srikrishna Karnamrutham and presented it in an exemplary abhinaya format, with stylish punctuation with jaties typical of Kathak in the kirtana part and with a delicate foot work in Teen Taal vilamba laya.

This Krishna Vandana launched her graceful show. Then followed a solo number, a display of footwork in Teen Tal vilamba laya, displaying her command over laya, adding Padant, meaning jaties, that are patterned to create a flowing beauty of rhythm. She was also spelling those jaties as she danced according to a beautiful plan.

Mukti Sri then presented the thematic part with technical chiseling with ease. Aavath Shyam, a thumri, was presented then that described the Pranaya Kalapam of Gopika and Krishna in a vivid mimetic form, with emotional input.

The beauty of Sancharies could be experienced while she was going through the number Kaleeya Mardanam in depicting how Krishna was literally playing with the snake, dancing on the hood, in myriad footwork patterns. Her paran, chakradhars, tihayies, all in Drut, Teen Tal in all the nritta oriented numbers were exemplary. The last piece was Tarana with footwork that was at once delicate and pleasant.

A special feature noticed in her performance was the bhaktibahava the mood of Bhakti, that was seeping through all the aspects of her presentation.

She proved highly imaginative, with her stance, gait and graceful movements - all a perfect asset to this talented girl. Kuchipudi exponent Shobha Naidu felicitated Mukti Sri on behalf of the organisation.
